EnerPHit, Sustainable Retrofits

Give existing buildings a new lease on life with the gold standard of energy efficiency and sustainability.

At Mesh Architects, we believe that sustainable architecture isn't just about building new; it’s about reimagining what we already have. We use our sustainable expertise to design EnerPHit retrofit projects that transform draughty, energy-hungry buildings into ultra-comfortable, low-carbon spaces.

Whether you are looking to dramatically lower your heating bills or future-proof your property for generations to come, our team offers the "frank advice" and creative vision required to make it happen.

What is EnerPHit?

You may have heard of "Passive House" (Passivhaus) as the leading standard for new build energy efficiency. EnerPHit is the equivalent standard, specifically tailored for retrofit projects on existing buildings.

Achieving the strict Passive House standard in an old Victorian terrace or a mid-century semi can be incredibly difficult due to existing structural limitations and orientation. As a result, the Passive House Institute developed EnerPHit to acknowledge these challenges while still demanding exceptional performance.

An EnerPHit retrofit focuses on:

Super-insulation

Wrapping the building to minimise heat loss.

Airtightness

Eliminating draughts and uncontrolled air leakage.

High-performance windows

Triple-glazed units that retain heat.

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Ensuring a constant supply of fresh, filtered air without losing heat.

Thermal Bridge Free Design

Removing cold spots where condensation and mould often form.

Why Choose Mesh for Your Retrofit?

Deep retrofitting is complex. It requires a meticulous understanding of building physics to ensure that insulating your home doesn't lead to damp or interstitial condensation issues later down the line.

In-House Certified Expertise

We don’t just dabble in sustainability; we are qualified in it. Our team includes Jenny Booth, our in-house Certified Passive House Designer. Jenny’s certification also includes EnerPHit certification.

Jenny’s expertise allows us to model your home using the PHPP (Passive House Planning Package). This data-driven approach means we can predict exactly how your home will perform before construction begins, ensuring your investment delivers real-world results.

Honest, Frank Advice

We pride ourselves on giving frank advice. An EnerPHit retrofit is a significant investment and a major construction undertaking. We will help you understand: The feasibility of reaching full EnerPHit certification versus a "deep retrofit" that adopts Passive House principles, but doesn’t achieve full certification.

The most cost-effective measures for your specific property type. How to phase the works if you cannot do everything at once (a Step-by-Step Retrofit).

The Benefits of an EnerPHit Retrofit

Why go to the lengths of an EnerPHit retrofit? The benefits extend far beyond just being "green":

Improved Comfort

Remove cold spots, draughts, and temperature fluctuations. Every room stays comfortable, year-round.

Health & Wellbeing

The MVHR system constantly filters the air, removing pollen, dust, and pollutants—ideal for allergy sufferers.

Silence

High levels of insulation and triple glazing create a peaceful, quiet indoor environment, even in busy areas.

Energy Security

With heating demand reduced by up to 75-90%, you are insulated against rising energy prices. See our retrofit project with Stainbeck Church.

Asset Value

A certified energy-efficient home is a premium asset in a market increasingly focused on EPC ratings and carbon footprints.

Our Approach to Sustainable Retrofit

We approach every project with a mix of creative flair and technical rigour.

Initial Consultation

We discuss your goals, budget, and the current issues with your property (e.g., mould, cold, noise).

Feasibility & PHPP Modelling

Using Passivhaus software to test different insulation and retrofit strategies.

Design & Planning

We design the architectural changes—extensions, layout alterations—alongside the energy measures. We handle the planning applications, navigating local conservation area constraints if necessary.

Technical Design

Detailed drawings that show builders exactly how to achieve airtightness and thermal continuity.

Construction Support

We work with contractors to ensure the rigorous standards are met on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most houses can be retrofitted, but the complexity varies. Traditional brick homes in Leeds (like Victorian terraces) require breathable insulation strategies (like wood fibre) to preserve the building fabric, while post-war cavity wall homes might need different approaches. We assess suitability on a case-by-case basis.

Not necessarily. While full EnerPHit certification is the gold standard (and adds value), many clients choose to follow "Passive House Principles" to achieve massive improvements without the cost of the final certification paperwork. We can guide you on which path suits your budget.

A deep retrofit is invasive. It often involves replacing floors, stripping plaster, and replacing windows. For a full EnerPHit project, we usually recommend vacating the property to speed up the work and ensure your safety.
